This picture shows how a water-proof membrane seals the shower stall to protect against leaks. Prior to the application of the sealer, this stall was framed in, a hand packed mortar base pan was formed, cement backer board installed on the walls and ceiling, and all seams were filled with thinset mortar and reinforced with fiber mesh tape.
Here is the finished product. Field tiles are American Olean 'Rialta' series. Accent stripes are rust and slate blue floor tile that we cut on the diagonal. This method is is a great way to introduce a custom look into a tile installation. Stripes may be subtle; such as shown or even less color intensive where you experience just a change in texture. Others may prefer accents that really 'pop' where vivid colors and/or three dimensional pieces are used.
The floor is fractured and tumbled marble. This natural material is quite beautiful and has a wonderful feeling underfoot. The individual pieces are small and irregular allowing for smooth transitions on a sloping shower floor. All shower floors must be properly sloped for drainage. There is no puddling on a Mont Vista shower floor.
